Loudspeakers are the most fun stereo component to buy. Usually the biggest and best looking, loudspeakers are the end result of all of the hard work you put into building a stereo. Crank it up! If loudness is what you want, you are in luck. That is super easy to do with a stereo. The beauty of it is that the louder you turn it up, the less the music matters. Just ask AC/DC. But if you want to actually listen to music, you job just got a lot harder. Without getting into great, loudspeakers need to deliver music to your ears. As any good comedian will tell you: “timing is everything”, and this is particularly true with loudspeakers. Once again, the industry boils down loudspeakers into overly simplified specifications, but you can get by knowing just a couple of things. First, it is true that all loudspeakers have a frequency range. That is, how high and how low can they produce sound. But we don’t listen to sound, we listen to music. And our hearing knows when a trumpet sounds like a trumpet, and when it does not. Loudspeaker designers spend an incredible amount of time voicing their products so that you will enjoy your music…not listen to a loudspeaker. It is hard to get right, but you will know it when you hear it.
